June was the spunkiest, sassiest little girl anyone could ever meet. At just two years old, she had an energy that could light up a room, a personality so big that it often left strangers smiling long after she had toddled off.
She loved animals with a fierce passion, spending hours pretending to be a doctor or nurse, tending to her stuffed animals and dolls as if they were real patients. Despite everything life had thrown her way, June rarely lost the smile on her face. Her laughter was infectious, her curiosity boundless, and her presence brought warmth to everyone she encountered.
Before her diagnosis, June had begun experiencing some troubling symptoms. Over a span of about two months, she had noticeable belly distention and intermittent constipation.
Her parents, Ali and Adam, tried everything they could think of—changing her diet, consulting specialists, trying different medications—but nothing seemed to work. The symptoms persisted, often returning with a stubborn intensity that left her parents worried and frustrated. They could sense that something was wrong, but nobody could explain it.
On the morning of September 20, 2020, June woke up with her belly larger than it had ever been. Ali and Adam exchanged concerned glances. Something about the way their little girl moved, the slight unease in her voice, made them act immediately.
They decided to take her to the emergency room. When they arrived, June, despite her young age, somehow sensed the gravity of the moment. She pleaded with the doctors, trying to communicate in her own toddler way that this wasn’t just a typical stomach problem.
The medical team began with lab work, which revealed an alarming detail: June’s blood pressure was dangerously high.
Alarm bells rang, and doctors quickly moved on to imaging. An abdominal ultrasound followed by a CT scan revealed the source of her symptoms—a tumor had formed in her abdomen. That night, June was admitted to the hospital. The following days were a whirlwind of tests—an MIBG scan, a biopsy, and additional imaging. The results were devastating.
The tumor had metastasized to her bones and bone marrow. The official diagnosis came through: stage 4 intermediate-risk neuroblastoma. Ali and Adam felt a mix of fear, disbelief, and heartbreak. But amidst it all, June’s resilience shone. She didn’t let the hospital environment, the needles, or the uncertainty dampen her spirit.
June’s treatment journey began immediately. She underwent eight rigorous rounds of chemotherapy, a regimen designed to attack the cancer and save her young life. Despite the intensity of the treatment, she handled it with a bravery that belied her age.
Slowly, the treatment began to show results: her bone and bone marrow cleared, and the abdominal tumor shrank by approximately 40%. By May 2021, the family had reason to feel cautiously hopeful.
Afterwards, June underwent a tumor debulking procedure and another biopsy. The biopsy showed that the remaining cells in the tumor were benign, offering a brief respite and a period of monitoring. But hope is often tempered with uncertainty.
On July 26, 2021, after experiencing persistent fevers for over a week and noticing her belly distending once more, the family learned that the tumor had begun to progress again. It was a crushing blow, a reminder that cancer is relentless and unforgiving.
June faced further treatments with her trademark courage. She endured two more rounds of chemotherapy, followed by two rounds of chemo-immunotherapy.
Each session was grueling, with long hours in the hospital, IVs, tubes, and wires becoming part of her daily life. Her parents watched with a mixture of pride and anguish as she maintained her playful spirit through it all. Even when the treatments brought discomfort, nausea, or exhaustion, June still laughed, played, and loved like any other child her age.
By November 2022, with her last scans showing little improvement, a new round of treatment began. Her parents clung to hope, drawing strength from their daughter’s bravery. But tragically, on December 22, 2022, June passed away. The world lost a bright little star, a child who had fought so fiercely and loved so unconditionally.
For Ali, the journey of having a child with cancer changed her life in profound ways. “June is my hero because at just two years old she has persevered, fought, and inspired so many people along the way,” Ali said. “She has gone through so much and never loses her smile.
Even when she’s connected to all of her IVs and tubes and wires, she just acts like a normal kid without a worry. People tell me on Facebook how she has inspired them to be kind to others or how she’s inspired adults to keep fighting in their cancer battles. June is my biggest hero, and I’m so proud to be her mom.”
Ali also acknowledged the profound challenges of this journey. She described it as the hardest thing she had ever done, but one that gave her a renewed perspective on life. She learned to love harder, let go of trivial frustrations, and truly appreciate the kindness of others.
The experience allowed her to live more fully in the moment, to treasure the little joys that life offered, and to find beauty in resilience and compassion.
Throughout June’s battle, one source of comfort for Ali was the support and resources provided by Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF).
Through their website, she could access stories, statistics, and community support that made her feel less alone. “It can make childhood cancer real to people that have never experienced it,” Ali said. “ALSF to me is the ultimate advocate for childhood cancer. It gives me hope that someone else is fighting for my child and the others just like her. It gives me hope that people care and that one day there will be a cure.”
June’s story is one of courage, love, and indomitable spirit. She lived a life that, though brief, left an enduring mark on everyone who knew her.
Her laughter, her compassion, and her unwavering resilience continue to inspire, reminding us all of the extraordinary strength that can exist even in the smallest of bodies. Through June, Ali and Adam—and countless others touched by her journey—learned that hope, kindness, and love are forces more powerful than any illness, and that a single child’s smile can change the world in ways no one could have imagined.
